Temporary workers play a crucial role in today’s dynamic workforce, providing businesses with the flexibility to meet short-term needs while offering individuals opportunities for diverse work experiences. In support of the REC’s current campaign, ‘Temp work works’, the STR Group is joining them in seeking to amplify the perspectives, challenges, and aspirations of those employed on a temporary basis.

As the gig economy and flexible work arrangements continue to grow, it’s more important than ever to recognise the value that temporary workers bring to the economy. By highlighting their evolving needs, we can advocate for better working conditions and policies that support their wellbeing and professional growth. Through the elevation of their stories and insights, we can shine a light on their essential contributions to the workforce.
What inspired you to pursue temporary work, and how does it align with your career or personal goals?
“I never wanted to be tied down to one company or get caught up in company politics. I prefer the freedom of being self-employed and enjoy being a specialist in my field. Temporary work offers me flexibility in terms of the clients and projects I choose. I don’t feel the pressure to conform to a corporate environment like a permanent employee might, and that independence has served me well so far.”
What do you find most rewarding and most challenging about working in temporary roles compared to permanent positions?
“You’re usually brought into a team to solve problems they couldn’t resolve themselves, and I really enjoy being able to ‘sort it out’ quickly and efficiently. Receiving compliments from senior management, like being told I’m ‘a breath of fresh air,’ is incredibly rewarding.”
How has temporary work impacted your professional development or skills growth?
“Temporary work keeps me on my toes. It pushes me to consistently deliver high-quality work to ensure repeat business and maintain my reputation.”
How has your recruitment consultant supported you during your time as a temporary worker?
“Jack has supported me for years. He’s always had my back and helped me negotiate better deals with some very challenging clients. He’s persevered and made sure things worked out in my favour each and every time. I couldn’t ask for more.”
What types of support or resources do you believe could improve the experience of temporary workers?
“For me personally, I have everything I need right now. But continuing to advocate for temporary workers is important for the community at large.”
Not just valuable, but indispensable
Temporary workers like Bill demonstrate the unique value that flexible employment brings to both individuals and businesses. Their adaptability, expertise, and independent spirit make them an indispensable part of today’s evolving workforce. By continuing to support and advocate for their needs, we can create a more inclusive and thriving work environment for all.
